The other leader in flasher technology here in the states is MarCum Tech. MarCum like Vexilar, is based out of Minnesota. The interesting tidbit here is that the owner of the company is 1/2 of the brother team that founded Thorne Bros. Its one of my favorite online muskie stores, and a real joy to visit in Minnesota come ice season.
MarCum like Vexilar, has several units to choose from, ranging in price to meet the needs and skills of the angler who buys them. Their top of line unit is the LX-5. It comes with one style of transducer, a dual beam that can be switched from 8 degrees to 20 degrees. The zoom feature can be moved and locked in anywhere in the water column. It comes in a standard soft pack, with an adjustable arm to hold the cable in position. Finally it comes with a 3 stage digital charger which is essential in good battery maintenance.
Taking a slightly step down from the “5″ is the LX-3. The unit comes with the same charging system on this revamped unit. The new and improved models became available last year with the introduction of its True Color technology. Older models could be sent in and upgraded at that time. Nice customer service there for those who had already bought units. About 500 watts weaker than the LX-5, the unit still has the expandable zoom feature.
Like the “5″ and what I forgot to mention for the “3″, the LX-2 also comes with a soft pack carrying case. Again this unit drops down another 500 watts from the next unit up in the chain, and also comes with a zoom that can expand from 5 ft off the bottom, to 10 ft. This unit comes standard with a 20′ transducer, and just a standard charging system.
The base unit is the VX-1. The unit is the introductory model, and comes with the same base as the other units, but not the soft pack cover that goes over it. At 600 watts it is less than the other three models, but still boasts plenty of power to read your jig and the fish you are targeting. The zoom locks into the bottom 5 foot, and then expands as you adjust the unit for the depth in which you are fishing.
All the units will read fish down to 160 feet. For those fishing just their home waters in this area, that’s plenty. For those who want to read deeper water in search of suspended perch, or even targeting lakers and salmon then these are not the units you want to consider. Manufactured and built in the United States, these units are fine quality and get the job done.
